Is Mouth Breathing Bad for You?

The Health Costs, and How I Fixed Mine The Night I Realised I Had a Problem

"Good night honey." "Night." And within five minutes, apparently, my snoring went off.Something I had inherited from my mother, who had a reputation for snoring.

My snoring never bothered me.

I was away in Lala land, oblivious to the prodding and poking that went on in the night.

In the morning, always the same story: how do you do that? Literally takes you five minutes to fall asleep. Gifted, I used to think.

That's until I did my breathwork certification and realised what was actually going on.

The snoring wasn't the problem. It was a symptom.

Mouth breathing was the actual problem, and for around 3 or 4 hours every night, I was doing it, completely unaware of what it was quietly doing to my health.

If you breathe through your mouth,during the day, at night, or both, this is what it's doing to your body.

What Mouth Breathing Does to Your Body

Mouth breathing seems harmless. Most people who do it don't even know they do it. But it sets off a chain of effects that touch almost every system in the body.

It bypasses every defence your nose provides

Air entering through the mouth is colder, drier, and dirtier than air that travels through the nose.

None of the warming, filtering, or humidifying happens.

None of the nitric oxide is added.

The lungs receive something closer to raw outdoor air than the carefully prepared breath your nose was designed to deliver.

It dries the mouth

Reduced saliva leads to bad breath, dental plaque, and a significantly higher risk of cavities and gum disease. Dentists can often identify chronic mouth breathers by the pattern of decay alone.

It changes how you breathe

Mouth breathing promotes faster, shallower chest breathing, less efficient for gas exchange and CO2 balance, and harder on the nervous system. 

It collapses the airway during sleep

When you breathe through your mouth, the tongue falls back and upper airway tissues relax.

This is the direct mechanical cause of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.

It stresses the nervous system

Mouth breathing drives a higher breathing rate and shifts the body toward sympathetic arousal, a more alert, stressed physiological state.

Nasal breathing does the opposite.

It reduces your immune defences

The nose's mucociliary system, the mucus and tiny cilia that trap and clear pathogens, is bypassed entirely.

So is the antimicrobial effect of nasal nitric oxide.

Chronic mouth breathers tend to get sick more often.

In children, it reshapes the face

This is perhaps the most striking effect.

Chronic mouth breathing during childhood alters tongue and facial muscle posture during growth, producing narrow palates, crowded teeth, misaligned bite, and changes to mid-face development.

The structural consequences can last a lifetime.

What Snoring Is Actually Doing to Your Health

Snoring is mouth breathing's most visible symptom at night, and it carries consequences well beyond disturbing whoever shares your bed.

Chronic snoring, particularly when linked to obstructive sleep apnea, is associated with a range of documented health risks.

Cardiovascular disease

Repeated airway obstruction causes drops in blood oxygen and spikes in blood pressure throughout the night.

Over time this stresses the cardiovascular system and raises the risk of hypertension, coronary artery disease, and heart attack. (Source: American Heart Association)

Stroke

The same oxygen fluctuations and inflammatory responses significantly increase stroke risk. (Source: Sleep Foundation)

Sexual dysfunction

Obstructive sleep apnea has been linked to erectile dysfunction in men and reduced libido in both sexes, likely through disrupted testosterone production and poor sleep quality. (Source: Journal of Sexual Medicine)

Cognitive impairment

Fragmented sleep affects memory consolidation, concentration, and reaction time.

Chronic sleep disruption has been associated with accelerated cognitive decline. (Source: NIH)

Depression and anxiety

The relationship runs both ways: poor sleep worsens mood disorders, and mood disorders worsen sleep.

Chronic snorers report higher rates of both.

Daytime fatigue

Even without full apnea, the micro-arousals caused by snoring disrupt sleep architecture, leaving you fatigued, less focused, and more irritable through the day.

Snoring is not benign.

It is a signal that something in your airway, your breathing mechanics, or your sleep physiology needs attention.

Why the Nose Exists: What You're Missing

The nose exists for one reason: to cleanse, pressurise, humidify, protect, and prepare every breath before it reaches the lungs.

Thousands of years of evolution, one function.

And mouth breathing bypasses all of it.

Here is what the nose is actually doing with every inhale.

Filtering

Nostril hairs catch large particles while sticky mucus traps smaller dust and pathogens.

Tiny cilia sweep that mucus to the throat to be cleared.

Warming and humidifying

Air is warmed by blood flow and moistened by mucus as it passes through the nasal lining, making each breath gentler on the throat and lower airways

Nitric oxide

The sinuses add nitric oxide to inspired air, a gas that kills microbes, relaxes airway muscles, and supports efficient gas exchange in the lungs.

Mouth breathing delivers none of this.

Slowing the breath

The nose offers mild resistance to airflow, naturally encouraging fuller, deeper breaths that reach the parts of the lung responsible for oxygen exchange, promoting diaphragmatic breathing rather than shallow chest breathing.

Calming the nervous system

Slow, regular nasal breaths stimulate the body's vagal (relaxation) pathways, lower resting heart rate, and can reduce blood pressure.

Mouth breathing drives the opposite response.

Protecting sleep

Correct tongue posture and a stable airway reduce the likelihood of airway collapse during sleep, improving sleep quality and reducing snoring.

The Role of the Tongue

The tongue plays a more important role than most people realise and where we position it is important.

When it rests gently on the roof of the mouth, just behind the front teeth, it supports proper jaw alignment, keeps the airway open, and enables smooth nasal breathing.

It also reduces the likelihood of the airway collapsing during sleep.

The tongue's position also influences the fascial tissues connecting the head, neck, and face.

Correct tongue posture maintains balanced tension throughout these structures, supporting healthy posture and reducing strain on the jaw and neck.

When the tongue sits low or presses against the teeth or the floor of the mouth, as it tends to in habitual mouth breathers, it contributes to tension and misalignment in the jaw, neck, and shoulders, affecting breathing, posture, and in children, facial development.

My Journey: Mouth Tape, Chin Straps, and Tongue Exercises

So mouth breathing was apparently more important than I had ever thought.

I was determined to change.

And so it began, the great journey into fixing my sleep.

Trial one: mouth tape

I found it on Amazon, used an app called Sleep Cycle to track progress, and lasted a few months.

The snoring decreased, much to my girlfriend's delight, when the tape was on.

But as the nights went by the tape would shift to wherever it found itself, which was rarely on my mouth.

Second trial, same story. Some nights I ripped it off mid-sleep.

Both attempts failed.

The chin strap

It worked for a while, but did I want to resign myself to wearning a chin strap for the rest of my life!.

My snoring improved when I had the patience to keep it on.

For me it became irritating and I struggled to get used to sleeping with it on.

The breakthrough: tongue exercises

Then I cam across myofunctional exercises, treating the cause rather than the symptom.

It made more sense, and was considerably cheaper.

Nothing to lose.

I integrated tongue exercises into my yoga routine, a full workout of the tongue for three to five minutes a day.

And the snoring started to come down.

It fluctuates, but sometimes no snoring at all.

Sometimes 20 to 45 minutes, a dramatic drop from 3 hours.

The Many Factors That Affect Mouth Breathing and Snoring

Along the way I discovered that snoring, and mouth breathing more broadly, is not one-dimensional.

Several factors influence how much you breathe through your mouth on a given night.

Environment

Staying somewhere with dry air drastically increased my snoring.

Humidity in your sleep environment matters significantly.

Dry air reduces moisture in the nasal passages and throat, which dries out the mucous membranes and causes tissues to become irritated and slightly swollen.

That swelling narrows the airway and makes the soft tissues more prone to vibrating, which is what causes snoring.

Food and timing

Eating after 7pm had a noticeable effect.

When I did a four-day water fast, my snoring dropped to virtually zero.

Inflammation and digestion directly affect airway tissue.

Sleep position

Lying on my back makes my snoring much worse.

Side sleeping prevents the tongue and soft palate from collapsing backward into the airway, a well-documented pattern.

Structural factors

A deviated septum narrows one or both nasal passages, making nasal breathing harder and mouth breathing more likely.

Other structural contributors include enlarged tonsils or adenoids, nasal polyps, an elongated uvula, and retrognathia.

The Results

Tracking with Sleep Cycle has been invaluable. Watching my average snoring time trend from two hours thirty minutes toward thirty minutes per night is genuinely motivating.

It fluctuates, a cold, a warm dry room, a late meal, but the trajectory is clear.

Treating the cause (weak tongue and airway muscles, habitual mouth breathing) rather than the symptom (blocking the mouth with tape) made the difference.
